Translators wanted – Translators wou in hierdie taal – Fjalori i përkthimeve të kërkuar në këtë gjuhë

In order to try and increase the number of collaborators to The GTC We have had to resort to the services of Mr Google… shame on us! We hope we have not involuntarily insulted our fellow translators in the process and that at best they could have a good laugh at our expense.

Translators from all countries, unite!

No, I am not a Marxist and yet I believe there is a case for urgency! An urgency to denounce unchained neo-liberalism which renders life impossible for the majority of worldwide citizens to the profit of the richest, the ransacking of planetary resources, the worshipping of money, ugliness, the casting aside of goods and people, the ferocious promotion of egotism; the pre-planned systematic destruction of our natural habitat, the lack of information on the human and ecological stakes stemming from our governing bodies.

An urgency to denounce the deliberate crushing of our educational systems, the threat weighing on cultural and linguistic diversity due to an ever increasing disappearance of languages and the uprising effects of globalization.

An emergency situation to safeguard, whilst still possible, the specifics of each and every country, of each and every culture, to voice our opinions rather than to just put a cross on a ballot paper, the right to circulate real information and not just to gossip.

As translators, our mission is to also use our talent, as a powerful communication tool to convey ideas which solely belong to us and as a means of resistance. continue reading!

When enough is not enough …..

…. we need to look elsewhere!

When first starting this blog it was with the intention to write interesting articles surrounding the wonderful subject of language & all that it encompasses. Three months on from the very first article, is that vision still the same?

I have to say no! Mainly because the initial vision was a very positive one & I soon found out after only a few hours of research that the one subject area that interested me the most, the translation industry, was one of much criticism and negativity. OK there was lots of praise for the big shot companies & the wonderfully ingenious software, but with regards to human contribution I didn’t see a lot  out there to make me smile – sad indeed I must say.

I have read lots of articles written mainly by people who actually benefit on the back of the hardworking translators, saying that translators should get off the “peanuts” wagon theory and should actually get on with searching for the positive side of being a freelance translator. After all, you do get to stay at home all day, sat on your backside, earning at least a meager living – come on what is there to complain about?

Is there really this belief out there that this is why translators choose their profession? That they couldn’t find anything better to do, so they decided to take the “easy” option, to stay at home, to string a few words together in the hope that somebody will throw enough scraps their way in order to keep the wolves from the door.

I should say at this point that these opinions don’t really surprise me – take a look at the news for example – if the word “news” were to be defined today what would we come up with – Doom & Gloom perhaps? continue reading!

Beware! The Scorned Translator!

BEWARE !!!!

This is the terrible message my associate received this morning from a web terrorist who has apparently been being 🙂 determined to exterminate translators for good:

“Technology WILL replace translators and I know a couple of things about creating complex software…doing so since (sic!) 30+ years”

Now, you are warned:  a very special software is about to be born and it all the more so dangerous as its idea was conceived at a time when I.T. was in the teething stages…

AND

This person also “trained young translators a few years ago and TOLD them their job is vanishing” did they commit suicide or decide to sell burgers instead?

I wish to express my gratitude to Translaterminator for the good laugh I had this morning both at this ridiculous ranting and at my poor business partner who was and is still fuming with rage!

The Machine, the Human & the Translator

Freedom of speech, being in charge of expression, hopefully knowing when it’s best to keep your mouth shut – if this in some way describes you then I guess you’re in the right place!

The Language Brigade

Yes it’s wonderful to be au fait with all the latest news on language & translation tools – well let’s face it the list is pretty endless …..

First let’s take a look at  language tools designed to assist in grammar and spelling: 1) After the Deadline to fix your writing 2) the text expanding PhraseExpress & of course we have to go on to mention something to do with Crowdsourcing (it’s everywhere after all) 3) that wonderful tool Phras.in which really helps you to “make your mind up”!

Forget Me Not

Now if you’re having a little memory lapse; let’s face it we all have them now and again don’t we? To the rescue we have: Tip of my tongue (my god that is so annoying & apparently gets worse with age) & Wolfram Alpha (doesn’t that sound a little like something out of an X Men film) & of course if you happen to have an annoying 6-year-old kid you could always ask him to jog that ailing memory! continue reading….

Le Gueuloir du Vendredi

~Not Just a Game of Monopoly!

I am very sorry to have to mention this sad story again but I was pretty much shocked when I bought two left-wing French newspapers last Tuesday.

I was first astounded by the fact that the manager of the IMF and former candidate for the French presidency had been arrested after allegedly raping a maid in a luxury hotel in New-York and then completely baffled by the obscene display of pictures of an old man, unshaven, handcuffed and visibly exhausted accused of a crime which has not even been judged yet.

Although our national media keep trying to exploit this unexpected manna by telling us that such proceedings are perfectly normal in America I strongly disagree with the fact that the French press should behave in the same way. But sadly what sells more than dirty stories on sex power and money? They do sell much better anyway than propositions for a fairer society, bonuses regulation and ways to regulate global finance.

What I find the most unbelievable is that our principle of “présomption d’innocence “which does not translate into American English is joyfully flouted by such images and also by a large amount of opinion polls and declarations from former “friends “ of Mr Strauss-Khan, not to mention those of his opponents. This is all perfectly illegal under French law (see article below) and very handy that under the circumstances the applicable law should be that of the United-States of America… continue reading ==>
